Slussen is the waterline world, WATERLINE: under the new Slussen at night the city's camera sees the water running the wrong way through the locks. You steer the water, not the boat: it drifts on by itself and floats on whatever level you set. HOLD and the chamber fills and the boat rises; LET GO and the level holds. Too high and its roof hits a bridge beam, too low and it runs aground on a sill; a lock gate lets it through only with the level inside its band, and a timed gate opens on its own rhythm. In the red chamber the water runs wrong and a hold drains it; in the culvert a drain pulls the level down by itself. From Saltsjön under the Guldbron, through Karl Johan's lock, the wrong-way chamber, the culvert and Nils Ericson's old lock — a fish passage now, where salmon leap — and the new Victoriaslussen, out to Mälaren.
